All modern vehicles have onboard computers to monitor and control emissions levels, engine temperatures and even power steering input.
When something goes out of predetermined parameters, these computers produce and store error codes that only specialised vehicle diagnostic equipment can read. While you may see a warning light on your dashboard, this only offers an indication of the problem.
